Helping Students Stay Safe & Speak Up

Posted Date: 03/16/26 (02:49 PM)

Good afternoon Toppenish Families, Caregivers and Staff,

Earlier today, a student reported being approached by an individual in a silver car and was asked to get into the car. The student used good judgment, left the area, and immediately told a trusted adult.

We are sharing this as an important reminder for families to talk with children about personal safety and the importance of trusting their instincts. Students should be cautious and if something does not seem right, they should leave the situation, get to a safe adult, and speak up right away.

Please remind your child to tell a trusted adult such as a parent, teacher, counselor, paraeducator, or school staff member if they are ever approached in a way that feels unsafe or if they see or hear something concerning. Students and families can also make an anonymous report through HearMeWA.

For families looking for support in having these conversations at home, KidSmartz is a helpful online resource. It offers kid-friendly videos, role-playing scenario cards, and other tools to help families and caregivers talk about safety in age-appropriate ways.

Thank you for partnering with us to help reinforce an important message: If you see or hear something that does not feel right, say something!
