April 6, 2020 : School Closure for the 2019-20 School Year
Dear Parents and Families,
On Monday, April 6, Governor Jay Inslee officially closed school for the remainder of the 2019- 2020 school year. I know many of you, especially our seniors, are experiencing a tremendous sense of loss. However, we know that challenges become opportunities. I honestly feel we are more prepared than most schools in the area. Even though the buildings are closed, instruction and learning will continue.
As a district, we are committed to do whatever it takes to help our students be academically successful. This includes providing daily breakfast and lunch for our students, Wi-Fi hot spots and chromebooks. Please make sure your child/children access their online learning on a daily basis. Our dedicated teachers and support staff are committed to assisting your children through these epic times in education.
In the days ahead, when and as we receive more information from the Governor’s office, we will keep you informed of any potential changes.
I know that this has been a trying time, but I appreciate your patience and understanding. We will get through this together.

3/16/2020 : TSD Closure to the Public / Online Learning
The Toppenish School District in response to the presidential press conference this afternoon has decided to shut down all school operations starting Wednesday, March 18th. Our district believes the health and safety of our students, families and staff are paramount with the current COVID-19 situation in our state. All of our district buildings will be closed to the public starting March 18th.
Our preliminary plan is that we will be shut down to students and staff from March 18th through March 27th. We will continue to honor our scheduled spring break from March 30-April 3rd. We will keep a close watch as the situation with COVID-19 progress and tentatively expect that our staff will be able to begin to implement our online learning platform starting April 6, 2020.
3/13/2020: School Closure March 17 - April 24, 2020
Dear Toppenish School District Staff,
I have a difficult announcement to share with you all today. Following the executive order issued by the Governor of the State of Washington, the Toppenish School District will close all schools from Tuesday, March 17 through Friday, April 24, 2020. This closure includes the cancellation of all out-of-district transportation, events, athletic practices, field trips, and competitions.
All school offices will be open regular hours through Tuesday, March 17 to allow for parents and students to retrieve personal items or medications as needed while schools are closed. Staff are expected to report to work on Monday, March 16th, 12 PM to 7:30 PM and Tuesday, March 17th at their regularly scheduled time for online training. After that, staff will continue to report to work until further notice.
In the coming days, our staff will be at work and focused on implementing and adjusting these plans. We will share updates about these items through School Messenger, our websites, and our social media channels as we finalize the details of our plans.
I think it is important to let you know that we may be asked by the state or the health department to extend the closure period. If this occurs, we will communicate to families as soon as possible to allow time to prepare.
Thank you for your ongoing partnership as we work together to continue to care for our students, staff, and families during these difficult times. We will get through this, and we will do it by taking care of each other, treating each other with kindness and compassion, and holding together as a community.
John M. Cerna, Superintendent
Toppenish School District
Reminders about how to prevent colds, influenza, COVID-19 and other illness at school
According to the Department of Health, schools do not need to take any special precautions beyond what is normally recommended to prevent the spread of viruses in schools. The entire community can reduce the risk of getting and spreading viral respiratory infections, including the flu and the common cold, through these simple steps, which will also prevent COVID-19.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Wash hands with soap and water frequently and for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose. Help young children do the same.
- If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Cover coughs or sneezes with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash and clean hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer (if soap and water are not readily available).
- Get a flu shot during the flu season.
