Supplemental Educational Services
Approved
Providers
The No Child Left
Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 enables parents to select supplemental educational
services for their children from the Office of Superintendent of Public
Instruction’s (OSPI) approved provider list. Supplemental Educational Services are tutoring or other supplemental academic
enrichment activities beyond the regular school day. Services are to be of high quality, research-based, and
designed to improve the students' academic achievement. Eligible students are those (1) not
meeting OSPI standards
in reading and/or math and (2) from low-income families.
List of Supplemental Educational Services
Providers
These are the
providers approved by OSPI on August 2004. Additional providers will be added to the list as they are
approved by OSPI.
Pursuant to OSPI
action, "the approval of these providers is provisional for one year at
which time an evaluation shall be made of each provider’s success in improving
the academic achievement of students."

Description: This
program serves students in reading and mathematics. Specific student populations include
low income, minority, migrant, and limited English speaking groups. Services are available online, at the
local community center and at the student’s school. Virtual tutoring in the safe environment of your home is how
your child will improve their academic performance at Acadamia.net. Students of moderate to low-income
families are introduced to the technology age and tutored in core subject
areas, which will increase their confidence and independence in the long
run. The Learn-n-Earn program
rewards your child as long as they are diligent and log-on for their sessions
and homework. Depending on the
school district, we offer computers, PlayStation 2 game systems or $100 Gift
Certificates as incentives. This program uses a diagnostic-prescriptive
instructional approach to pinpoint the student’s strengths and weaknesses and
tailors instruction to their needs.
Students work at their own pace and demonstrate mastery of a particular
skill of at least 70% accuracy before moving on to the next level.
The cost of instruction is $50 hourly per
individual, $1,500 per student, per year.

Description: This
program serves students in reading and mathematics. Specific student populations include
low income, and minority students.
Services are provided at the provider address, at the student’s school,
community center, Rainier Beach Family Center, New Holly Family Center, BF Day
Elementary School and Thurgood Marshall Elementary School. Atlantic Street Center utilizes
feedback and input from the student’s teachers to identify problem areas the
youth is having in meeting district standards. These areas are reviewed and incorporated into an individualized
plan for each student. For the
past two years, Atlantic Street Center has been utilizing evidence-based
strategies identified and listed in the “Communities that Care” Prevention
Model. In addition, we rely on and
utilize the National Reading Panel Results. Reading sessions are structured individually and tailored to
the needs of the individual student to help them understand and learn the
relationship of sound and fluency.
The cost of instruction is $14-18 hourly per individual, and $14-18
hourly per group.
